Apache 14 rowing, paddling and sailing eventually

For some time I have been trying to work out if it was possible to row, paddle, double paddle and sail a simple 14' open canoe hull. I bought a bare Apache 14 hull and some oak from the local sawmill.
Positioning of seat, rowlocks, footbrace had to work for all 4 configurations so I started with a movable seat and footbrace.

I finished her woodwork today so popped down to Keyhaven to see if she was going to be balanced with the seat in the same place for rowing and paddling. Well, she was. Rowed really well and paddled fine. Well pleased. Not sure if I will bother with the sail since it's so nice to have the three working well.

Great to have a simple rowing boat that I can load on the roof rack singlehanded with my KariTek loader.

What happened to the Snipefish Brian; still stuck in the wrong end of your chum's workshop?

Re: Apache 14 rowing, paddling and sailing eventually

Hi Chris, well it has been up till just this last few weeks. We have actually glued the gunnels and keel strip and skeg on. So her hull is completed in "building" terms. Now down to sanding, filling and coatings, so I am going to see if I can borrow a key for the workshop and get on and finish this first hull.

Good to make some progress, I think she will be a super estuary boat.

Are you on your 5 ports cruise this weekend/next week? When might you call into Keyhaven?

Re: Apache 14 rowing, paddling and sailing eventually

Brian

There has been a family hiccup, so I have had to abandon any attempt at the Five Harbours for the moment.  A day on the river OK, but a tide and a half down the wrong end of the Solent is not on for the time being.

What strength is your fleet now?  Sawing up some timber for a boat handling frame, my back has again reminded me that I am no longer the thug I might have once was, so I am trying to cut down to one adequately light all-rounder and I could not bear to part with 'Tit Willow' the gaffer, so she will continue to head a fleet of what until recently has been five and may eventually be reduced to two

Unless of course I decide to b***er the back and build the big one....
