Re: Bikes Bikes Bikes.

Although if you reduce speed by 20% then journey times and traffic density increase by the same amount. In many areas speed limits are irrelevant as speed is dictated by traffic levels. Then it goes the other way and congestion = pollution.

Grldtnr refers to "The cycling nirvana - Netherlands".
The average Brit, who hasn't tried it, cannot possibly comprehend the contrast between UK and Netherlands transport infrastructure, or why the Dutch have got it so right.

Do you share the (UK) motorists' view; "Bikes shouldn't get in the way of cars", "Cars should have priority on the roads" and such?
I do, yet I bike more miles than I drive.
Why? - The Dutch have the solution, and it is so simple.

In many places bikes are NOT ALLOWED on the road.  They MUST use the Fiets-pad (cycle-path) which runs more or less parallel, but separated by a significant width of grass, hedge, or other barrier.

It gets better - In many places, bikes-only "roads" several metres wide run completely separated from the motor-vehicle roads, passing through peaceful countryside from village to village, town to town.
Similar concepts are applied in towns and cities.  Motor-only-streets run parallel to Bikes-only-streets.  Motorists love it as much as the cyclists.

Bikes get priority and protection at almost all intersections, and sight-lines are carefully aligned to optimise everyone's visibility.

Expensive?  Actually no.  The saving in cost of road accidents, death, generally better health and such, more than covers the (long term) relatively low cost of the cycle network.
Remember also, unlike motor roads, the maintenance cost of cycle-ways is minimal.

Maybe one day we will get it right.

Here is a humble bike with a boaty connection.

I bought an old frame on FB Marketplace to be cut up to start a pedal power project for my boat, but when I got it home I realised that my sons old bike had a much more suitable frame, so I cut that up instead. Then I moved wheels, brakes etc. to the old frame and added an old mans saddle, and cowhorns to remind me of my teenage years. It's very comfy and a bit too big for me.
