Re: Caledonian Yawl

Finished at last. After laminating both halves, sticking them together and shaping. Loads of sanding and prep, six coats of Ravilak, and yes sanding between coats. Bolting to re-inforce the laminations - the whole thing is lighter than the previous one. I hope it is stronger, it should be.

The whiteness at the top of the photo is just the reflection from the varnish !!!!!
To scale it it is leaning up against the garage doors.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Is that the world's biggest Jews Harp?

It's a beautiful piece of woodwork.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Would make a super Lacrosse racket.

Are you going to fit a triangular strengthener at the top also? Looks like it would help.

Cheers

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Well I finally fitted it today. A bit hairy on the water, had to bail out some water first, the wind was gusting f5 and the water was lumpy to say the least. But a good tight fit and she looks good. I'll take some photos sometime later. I was a little late so only had about an hour and a half of working time before I had to row back to the chains, then there was no water! Happy days and I fell over in the mud  AGAIN - clothes in the bucket again.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Sorry it has taken so long to post a photo of the tiller in situ. I kept forgetting my camera.
Anyway here is the shot of it. Performs well.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Well after the broken mast in August, a stress fracture in the timber I now have a new mast. Just varnishing it with Ravilak. Poor picture shows new one alongside old snapped version. Rather poor light in the new barn. ( not as good as the previous abode and a lot more expensive.)

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Hadn't realised it had snapped at it's widest point (albeit also at the point of greatest stress.) At least the old mast still has some length to it, will be useful for something one day!

New mast looking good. Glad you've found a new workshop. shame about the cost.

Tim.

I'm sure you can make the armour... and I look forward to the vision of you on horseback with lance in hand!

Just thought I would share this photo of Calluna riding at her bouy in Chichester harbour. What a beautiful day.

Richard

Yes it looks like a beautiful day in a beautiful location.

I'm searching my brain for the exact location. Is it at the end of the Itchenor moorings, towards Dell Quay?
If not I'm guessing its a long way round to the West.

Wherever it is l wish the whole gang was there 😀.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

In reply to this post by inwe
Well having been in discussion with a friend who witnessed my excursion in the mud after a not too pretty pirouette on the end of the centre-plate, a discussion ensued about the control of the mizzen. He came up with a picture of a Thames barge with the sheet passing down to the rudder thus giving some directional control to the sail from the rudder. At the moment the sheet goes down to the bumpkin. The plan is to extend the tiller aft to about the same position as the bumpkin. Thus as the tiller goes over it will pull the mizzen as well. As the single hander already has his hands full with tiller and main sheet the third hand is made redundant.
This extension will be a laminated piece atop the current tiller. Again Khaya but I have found a supplier half the price of Robbins !
We'll see how it goes.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Interesting idea Richard.  Will it give a rather strange feel to the tiller when not actualy tacking, perhaps even a 'lee helm' effect?   Would not matter on a Thames barge since they control the rudder through a screw mechanism that prevents the rudder back-driving the steering wheel.

Oh alright its a Selway-Fisher ' Lillie' only in clinker-ply. We thought that it leant itself to the gentle lines of clinker.

Re: Caledonian Yawl

Pretty.

Good raid boat potentially as well as playing on the broads.
