Since I´m building one of Tom Dunderdales boats, I sometimes visit his website. Because I like his boats. His old website was really poor, so I´m glad that he has updated it.
I like his lines a lot and if/when I some day in the future will build something bigger, this Clinker version of his Apple design will be high on my list.
I, too, had noticed the improved website. I like the boats, too.
Tom's IMP double-ender is one of the most attractive single-chine hulls I've ever seen. I was very tempted to build one, but now I'm busy on the restoration of a 50 year old grp boat - which might prove to be the only boat I need in the future.
I bought it with a good trailer, alloy mast and s/s rigging, galvanised centreplate, a couple of sails and various bits of cordage and chandlery - and it all cost less than the price of the plywood sheets I was about to buy to build a 16ft double ender.
It was designed by Illingworth and Primrose, so it has pedigree, too.
Well, if you´re interested, I´m selling a 27´Albin Vega with new sails. The engine needs attention.
The IMP is a nice boat as well. In fact, I like all his doubleenders and I think they are the prettiest on the market. This one is also high on my building list: (But I would build it clinker ply)
It's ironic that your Vega's engine needs attention. I believe the Vega was created by Albin as a way to extend the market for their small marine engines.
It seems they made the boat too good - it will outlast the engine it was built for!
I had also noticed Tom's new much better organised website.
My personal favourite is Apple 13. Not too small, not too big for comfortable single handing and it fits my 16'6" garage when finished and stored on a combi trailer for the winter.
I to like the Apple 13 and for the same reasons. I would just build it with a slightly higher freeboard.
My Vega is 41 years old and the engine is an original Albin 12hp (2cyl sidewalve petrol). I´m pretty sure that if I had the energy to revise it, it´ll run for another 40 years. It runs really slow so wear is slow and you can get all spare parts and they are not overly expensive.
