Design a boat in one minute

https://youtu.be/SxbmtSm_xnQ?t=171

The first minute of the above video shows a lapstrake pram designed - in one minute!
Feel free to keep watching after one minute. I have TCAD for Mac but so far can only use 2D.

RE: Design a boat in one minute

One minute to "draw" a boat, after you have spent years becoming  proficient enough in Turbo CAD to do that.

TC is very clunky, I have an old version which never had that level of functionality, but it won't run on my Windows 10 Computer.

I suspect he was using the latest Pro Platinum version which retails at around £1,400. Or £399 for an annual subscription.  The Industry standard now seems to be Rhino which has hydrostatic options but is also eye wateringly expensive.

Re: Design a boat in 7 minutes

That video contains all the tricks that CAD/CAM demonstrators use - start with prepared shapes (which might have taken hours to develop) and a few tweaks, all done! Except that nobody knew if the design was accurate, complete or fit for purpose.

Then open another design, 75% done but nobody realises, a few commands that look impressive, then cut to the finished design. Ta da!

I worked in CAD/CAM for 23 years and every support guy knew those tricks. In the old days the seasoned guys would wrap the power cord around their ankle, out of sight - if the software crashed badly they secretly pulled the plug and blamed it on the power.

Try building a boat quickly.....

Re: Design a boat in 7 minutes

I wasn't suggesting this was a fully designed boat but as someone who can't do 3D I was impressed with how quickly you can get to a starting point. This is the $1500 version and mine was £100 - it wouldn't even produce dxf or dwg files as it was supposed to do until an upgrade became available; embarrassing when you want to send drawings for a quote.
Anyway, I really enjoy sketching on graph paper and was pleased to find out that I.K.Brunel sketched the Great Eastern on graph paper.

sorry, I also don't know how to steal an image off the internet...

Re: Design a boat in 7 minutes

IKB is one of my heroes.

He was definitely ahead of his time. Here is 12 month trial of a bulk carrier fitted with rotating sails:

PS The photo maybe artificial.
