Goat Island Skiff

Hello all,
I’m just starting out on the build of a Goat Island Skiff designed by Michael Storer.  I’ll be keeping a log of the build here http://georgeisted.blogspot.com/ and I’m more than happy to pop a note on this forum with updates if you are interested.  I certainly hope to join in with the HBBR activities as and when time family allow.

I’m starting off the build with some of the bits that will be required during the construction of the hull  such as the mast, daggerboard and dagerboard case.  The mast will be first and I’m hoping to put some time into it this weekend.

Hello Brian,

I didn't think there was going to be a Solent raid again this year, I would love to do it but I'm already sailing for 5 weeks in June (doing the AZAB) so getting permission from the boss for another week away is not going to be easy!  

Also, I'm pretty confident that the GIS won't be even half finished.  I'm loosely aiming for the Caledonian Raid in 2012?

Hello all,
I had a bit of time this weekend and made a good start on the project. Three sides of the mast were shaped and glued together and I have made the blank that the centreboard will be cut from.

Last night I found time to get the fourth side of the mast glued up so I just need a session with a sharp plane to finish up with a nice light-weight GIS mast.

The Goat is coming along well, all the bulkheads and transom have been built and the hull sides are in one piece.  Won't be too long until she goes 3D.

I need to look out some suitable waterproof hatches for BH 1 and 4 so any good suggestions or hatches to avoid are very welcome.  Cheap is good but good quality is better....

Hi Richard,
I would love to be able to sail with another GIS at some point as there is bound to be a learning curve on the water.  Not looked at events for next year in detail but I hope to attend a mixture of DCA and HBBR weekends where possible.

Hi all,
I added a note about different types of Epoxy on my building blog but as it is cold in the UK other HBBR members may benefit from this info pasted below....

I have spoken on here before about moving from West epoxy to PEC for this project because I became fed up with the amount of amine blush and the cost of West.   Having used PEC quite a bit (3-4KG) for bonding, filleting and coating I am looking again at an alternative.  The PEC epoxy is easy to mix and use but is more viscous than would be ideal, heating the epoxy helps but when working in an unheated workshop on an unheated hull the epoxy soon thickens up.  The biggest issue with PEC (and I have spoken to them about this) is the cure time, it just seems to take ages.  I have tried using it for coating in a heated environment and that works fine but it still takes a much longer than the standard epoxy from West.   When using PEC in the workshop it literally takes days to reach a full cure.  Now if I was after an epoxy with a long working time and I was building during the summer or a in a heated workshop then PEC would be absolutely fine but for me as a home-user in a unheated garage in winter it just doesn’t quite stack up.  Unfortunately PEC don’t make a fast or rapid version of their product but on the positive side their product did not produce amine blush, there was a small amount of blushing but significantly less than West.

So next up on the epoxy test will be Syntac EPAFD from reactive resins, having spoken to them I am going to try their “Rapid” and “Fast” hardeners.   I am hopeful that the Rapid hardener will allow wet-on-tack coating of the Goat at cold temperatures (5-10 Celsius) this will hopefully allow up to three coats in a working day.   I’ll report back on how I get on but so far I have been impressed with the knowledgeable staff and willingness to help.

Just as an update to my previous posing about the different types of Epoxy I have done three wet-on-tack coats with the Reactive resins Syntac epoxy and I am very pleased with it.   Predictable curing time, good to work with, great finish and not particularly smelly.  Best of all, no amine blush at all!

So far so good and a big thumbs for Syntac from Reactive Resins.

Paul just because you're not paranoid, it doesn't mean Ratcatcher isn't watching you.

I thought it was quite a good offer first time round, especially if you knocked him down a bit, but its a very very limited market. Home built boats get some very funny looks around these parts.
