Insurance for home-built things

Hello all, and apologies for not joining in with the Thames raid; I saw the excellent pictures from Randonneur.
Does anyone insure their boats against third party risks? I want to launch in the Medway and for that I need a license and for that I need insurance. (large ramp, closest to home and need to assess stability with solar roof). First quote >£80, does that seem reasonable? Also, no one seems to recognise our category of small craft.

Hi Alan.

BCU (Canoe England) membership includes 3rd party insurance as well as a licence to travel most waterways in the UK. They are vague about the definition of canoe! They haven't yet reached a conclusion regarding Zelva (Mirage Drive camping boat) despite promising to some years ago.

I insured my Acorn Skiff with CraftInsure, they seemed to be among the few that could cope with the boat not being a standard registered marque. Last bill was for less than £50 for a comprehensive policy. But she is just sails and oar.

Other suggestions from those with wider knowledge will no doubt follow.

Noble Marine do relevant third party insurance, for just about anything as far as I can tell.  They've been covering my contraptions in this respect for a decade or so -

I concur with my good sailing friend Chris W.

We have both used Noble Marine for years, to insure our homemade boats. They only worry about dinghy size, as 14ft or less will do very little damage to an expensive 32ft yacht.

I have a feeling that Noble Marine was where I got the quote for £80plus, but I will do the obvious thing tomorrow and phone them, and maybe craftinsure rather than filling online forms. I did get a £10 cheaper quote online which was third party only covering "river craft up to 60ft (narrow boats to 75ft) and capable of no more than 14kts"! So on the basis of energy dissipated in a collision my insurance should be about 89p.

I can also give my vote to Craftinsure. I have used them for a number of years on my home builds at very reasonable cost. Of course the proof of any insurance firm is how well they pay up. Haven't tested them on that yet, fingers crossed.

Thanks all for your help; I phoned Noble and they quoted £34 based on my description and subject to photos for their viewing pleasure, so that will do. It seems to be a standard sailing dinghy policy.
