Love at 1st sight?

Hi,
Anybody know anything about these, apparently it is a "Kittery rowing skiff"

Very tempting but unfortunately she is in Cornwall and I am in Surrey.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

The Kittery Skiff was made in the US by Alden - http://rowalden.com/.
Friends of mine have an Alden Whitehall double skiff and it is lovely to row - reasonably fast but stable.
The sliding seat unit comes out so you can store it in the boot while the boat goes on the roof, a very handy system that means the boat is much lighter when you lift it.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Looks like Cornwall museum or someone is getting rid of things to make more space.*

Of course as it was made as a training exercise, it may not float but at £52 who cares? You could totally re-glass it and still have change from a couple of hundred.

At 36kg it's light enough to car-top too.

Simon

* There's also this - replica of a Seal Cove marine sailing skiff (Farmers Daughter to those who know their Chapelle) - ebay item 3654759247 - currently £1 and being sold by Greenwich

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Now if someone who lives in Cornwall wants the Seal Cove marine sailing skiff (just down the road from me) this could get interesting!

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Steve - you are too late - I looked at the link you gave and I see that the boats have now been sold - for £1 for the pair.  Hope you are not too gutted - 30foot boats for 50p each sounds like reasonable value for money.  But would have been hard work rowing such big boats down the Thames on your own.  But dont you already have a nice rowing boat, the one with the blue fenders all round?  As for us, Josephine is very happy with her green row boat.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Hi John,
I did contemplate them as a nesting boat project i.e. cut out the middle section to get them down to a single handed size, and then fit bulkheads to join the two bits together. In the end I decided it was better to let someone with a longer garage have them.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Hi,
Wondering if the hull from this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Merlin-Rocket-sailing-dinghy-bonfire-material-or-restoration-project/352806036850?hash=item5224e0e572:g:BCIAAOSwcDBdjkOE could be made into something useful, maybe even room to sleep on board this time.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

I had a brief flirtation with a Merlin Rocket about 35 years ago.  They have a very shallow hull, a bit like a saucer, so not the best hull form for a sleep aboard.  They are also difficult to restore.  The one I owned had a cold moulded ply hull, that was a real pig to repair.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

I had a clinker Merlin Rocket. It was my first attempt at restoration. A pig is putting it mildly. If I remember there was about five planks needed replacing as well as a first attempt at riveting!!!!!!
I would agree not a boat for sleeping in.

Re: Love at 1st sight?

Hi,
All true but the early clinker ones are a lot less saucer shaped, there are three available and if the hull is not sound then November 5th beckons.
