Race to Alaska

Following on the discussion re Race to Alaska which was started here
Race to Alaska

Its interesting but not entirely surprising that the big Tri's are in the Lead, although they still have a very long way to go.
For many just getting to the start line is a major achievement, and to finish would be amazing.

Every boat carries an identical spot tracker supplied by the Victoria yacht Club, so their positions can be tracked.

When the first boat gets to the finish, a sweep boat will start at Victoria and "tag" each boat out of the race as it moves up towards the finish. Competitors can decide to carry on their cruise but the are officially out of the race. Even this process could take about seven days, so even once the sweep boat has set out you could still beat it to the finish.

There are still single entry kayaks etc. in the race, and at least one Hobie Island Adventure  You can identify the Teams and follow their progress here. http://r2ak.com/

Glad I'm not having to organise the Mini Bus back.

Re: Race to Alaska

Which reminds me...thanks for organising the mini bus back on the first day, and for all the not-organising you did for the raid. And apologies for calling you 'Boss' and asking what the plan was in that annoying way (but it was an open goal, frankly).

The first eleven contenders have now completed the Race to Alaska. The first few were fast trimarans and the like. Coming in at an amazing 7th were the Soggy Beavers in their outrigger canoe in which they managed to maintain an amazing average speed, and in at 11th is Roger Mann the first guy to sign up for the race and the first solo finisher in a Hobie Island Adventure. The solo version of the one we were playing with at Beale.

Absolutely outstanding.

In 12th place, about 300kms back are Team Excellent Adventure in a Montgomery 17 which looks a bit like a West Wight Potter, with a sliding seat rowing station bolted into the cockpit.
At  13th place is Mike's Kayak, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Stroll on.

Re: Race to Alaska

I I became hooked on watching Riger Mann's final approach to the finish on the Tracker. He was racing two other boats very closely, a large cat and an Etchell of all things. Truely amazing. They got away from him and Roger needed some sleep, I could see he had stopped but the tracker was showing 0.3 of a knot for some reason. Daylight came and Roger sailed in, here he is finishing on the Alaska harbour web cam.

Someone then posted why he was moving when sleeping. Seems he had lost his anchor when the boat pitch poled! So he tied up a large floating patch of kelp!

His boat is the new 2015 version which is larger, much more floatation, perhaps not enough though the conditions were extreme in the first week. Half the fleet dropped out.

Roger was developing a home build wooden version of the Hobie with Metz Boats
http://www.metzboats.de/htm/designs/multihulls/triraid560s/triraid560s.htm

But the shipping cost was so high to the race and back home that it was the same amount to just buy the new version. He has it up for sale or will donate to a local charity if not sold. I reckon Hobie should buy it and display it at all the boat shows.

Talking of people doing amazing things in smal adventure boats, Keith from the OCSG has posted a video this morning of a recent trip they did around the Isle of Wight. I was swimming off the beach at Milford that morning and the only reason I could swim was that the waves were breaking on the sand bar and I could swim between the bar and the shore. White tops right across the Bay. Quite a testing trip but does show, as Roger's does, what small boats can achieve if the helm is experienced enough. Very impressed that a new 2015 updated model Hobie took such a testing trip and finished. Although plastic it must be well engineered.

Re: Race to Alaska

Looking at the Metz TriRaid 560s, it appears to have a forward facing rowing system. The floats are half folded in to sit at the correct width for rowing.
