Irritatingly, the film seems hell-bent on NOT showing whether he is sculling/yulohing, or fish-tailing.
Initially I thought maybe the blade was working vertically; particularly as the handle appears to be cocked-up. However there seems to be a slight bend in the loom - concave downwards, which is either induced by pressure, or would assist a blade working horizontally. Watching the film as he drags the oar up the beach, it is actually horizontal.
There's still nothing like making life difficult for yourself as he has no tethering lanyard on the handle to prevent the blade diving under pressure, though that reduces the freedom to allow for wave action. I think the spade handle is to assist in rotation at the end of each stroke, indicating that he hasn't really appreciated the off-set approach, which means the blade is not self-rotating either. Unlike the yuloh the loom is working in a crutch, rather than on a pivot also reducing it's inclination to self-cock and it increases the friction involved
