Spam, spam, spam, bacon, egg and spam

The recent spammers have been nuked and banned. They seemed to have perfected a way to register and post immediately.

But I've stepped the security up to HBBR-DEFCON 4 which means you have to be a Member to post - when people join they are initially Registered and I will get an email when they register.

Registered users will be upgraded to members when its obvious they are not spammers. So far I have upgraded 72 people to Members - everyone with 4 or more postings and everyone in Introduce Yourself.

If I forgot you and you want to post, simply drop me an email by clicking on my name in the topic.

Re: Spam, spam, spam, bacon, egg and spam

Well done, and thanks from all of us.

Michael

PS does anyone else remember Spam, eg Spam fritters? I seem to recall relatively recent TV adverts, of all things. The old-fashioned stuff tasted of....well, spam, 'nuff said.

Re: Spam, spam, spam, bacon, egg and spam

Yes, I remember Spam.  Also, "Plopped Ham and Chork" .  Bacon Grill was a much cheaper variety of tinned ham and pork, that we fed the kids on, to our shame.  I strongly suspect that these were all a much better quality product than mechanically recovered meat is today, although we will never know, and I wouldn't knowingly eat anything like that now.

Nothing wrong with a spam and egg buttie occasionally... good for the soul!

Re: Spam, spam, spam, bacon, egg and spam

My favourite was egg, bacon, spam and chips without the spam....

I have upgraded all 98 who posted at least one message, they now have Member status. If any of the silent Registered users want to post feel free to email me and I'll upgrade you.

Re: Spam, spam, spam, bacon, egg and spam

We now have 149 "Members". There are 5 people remaining as Registered users, either because they joined very recently, had a Hotmail address (which are frequently hacked) or I accidentally missed them.

It is not possible to search for "people who are only registered", so its difficult now to find the 5 Registered-only members - please email me if you want to post messages, now or in the future.

Also if you click on your username at the top-right of the screen and pick "Account Settings" you can check if you are in the Member group. If you are in the Member group you are free to post new messages or reply to existing messages.

After all the hassle of dealing with spammers, here is the wonderful Monty Python "Spam" sketch from the 70s. Somewhat ironically it features our boat building pioneers. Enjoy!

Thanks Paul, your efforts to keep us from the dreaded spammers (how did they get called this?) is much appreciated.

Spam. So called after the  Monty Python sketch of the same name.
If you remember, a couple are in a restaurant and the wife tries to get something other than Spam.
In the background are a bunch of Vikings that sing the praises of Spam. Pretty soon the only thing you can hear in the skit is the word 'Spam'.

That same idea  happens on mailing lists and forums, where if large scale inappropriate postings are allowed you couldn't pick the real postings out from the Spam.

Jeremy,

Glad to help. Look at my 30th Sep reply on the web site......then you will know how spammers got their name!

All,
I have finally pulled the big switch:
Only members can post and reply
Only members can view the list of all members - this prevents a newly registered spammer sending junk private messages to some or all members....before we get a chance to nuke the spammer.
Only I (with admin rights) can promote people to member status - we'll see how well that goes. It may be possible to allow moderators to do this also.

Oooooh Admin!

Shouldn't this topic be in 'Forum Ideas/Issues'?

The answer of course is that this topic should be where Admin dictates....

Or like Humpty Dumpty said - "It goes just where I choose it to go"

The Spam filter has worked!  A random username with a dodgy Yahoo email look suspicious ...but the request for posting privileges rambled into a sales pitch for jewellery and boots.

That username and email address has been nuked without trace.
