Spars...

I've just made my first round cross-section mast from square cross-section by 8-siding then 16-siding then sanding, and it turned out to be one of the most satisfying things I've done in my 7 years of boat building.  I may turn into some kind of spar nerd.

Yes I agree, it took me two goes to make the yard for Sneaky as the first was way to flexible but I have to agree it is very pleasing to make a round spar.  I thought it would be difficult but small steps and making sure I didn’t remove too much material has resulted in a really nice round (and tapered) yard that has the flex characteristics I was after.

Did you use a spar gauge or do it by eye?

I used a spar gauge for 8-siding and 16-sided by eye.  And by the time it was 16-sided the sanding was surpisingly easy.   It was one of those things in life, like using a manual SLR camera for the first time, that looks complicated but turns out to be elegantly simple and satisfying.
