Re: tony nichols

Tony,

Tim has told you all the important details. The raid is basically "Dad's in boats" who have escaped for a great adventure!

Re: tony nichols

HI Paul

Thanks for joining in, i may or may not go on the raid, but will definately go to Barton turf.Have been on a wherry trip from there, what a beautiful way to travel.  If i were to attend the raid do you know the absolute last date to be included.  Re; the Barton rally is it to be over 2 or3 days would fancy having a b&b for at least a couple of nights.  I intend to get as much canoeing in as possible before then on local rivers, actually my local rivers are the Medway & Stour one of which is  1 hour away the other about 35 minutes. Still it does go on the roof of my Fiesta rather well, i had occasion to weigh it the other day comes in about 45lbs, i assume this is fairly light. I know ladies do not attend the raid, but do they go to Barton as i would like to attend with 2 twosomes ie me my other half, my brother & his other half.  Would make a nice long weekend (as usual all we need is good weather) am crossing everything as i write. Cheers Tony

Re: tony nichols

Hi,

was the raid ever declared men only or did it just work out that way?

Steve

It just worked out that way. Again. Sad, isn't it?
Still going, mind.

My wife would rather drill teeth than get in a boat, but i don't mind if anyone else's wife, mistress, or girlfriend wants to come along, hell bring all three!
There's no sexism at HBBR events even when our slightly politically incorrect Rat-catching Yorkshire Man comes along.

Tony, the Barton Turf week-end is the nearest thing we have to a family outing. People come singly, in family groups, with or without kids, better halves, dogs etc.
Its generally a static event based at the Barton Turf Adventure Centre. For accommodation you can camp in tents, caravans or rent one of Simon's static tents. Simon and Sheila will provide as much or as little catering as you can eat. Most of us enjoy their hearty cooked breakfasts and the BBQ is great. The classroom / Mess hall makes an excellent base.  As an alternative some have gone for B&B or even hired a plastic stinkpot, i.e. Broads Cruiser its up to you.

Last year a few of us branched out on the Monday and headed down river to Thurne Mouth for a short raid.

All four of you will be very welcome.

To add to that list any offspring available are also be welcome at any HBBR event/raid. For a bunch of 'blokes with boats' we are very civilised. Language is safe for any company, drinking is very moderate (by any standards) and conversation tends more toward intellectually stimulating (though occasionally boat orientated). We're safe company, indeed exemplary, for any family member!

As Graham says static events (Barton, Cotswolds, etc) tend to attract more family members. Particularly when the weather's fine. It's good to see those as young as three getting into boats and having fun as well as teenagers still talking to their parents.

Tim.

Re: tony nichols

Hi Tim and all

I need to buy two strips of Ash 1metre long by 18mm wide i would like it in strips of 6mm thick, is this possible, or do i have to buy a stock piece and cut it myself. I could do this, but do not have access to a band saw. I would like the Ash not to be kiln dried is this also possible, I would require 4 strips per 1 metre length, i have been told in this form it will bend without steaming, any views on this would be much appreciated, once i achive this job on canoe i will be almost ready to varnish (once the weather improves). Many thanks Tony

Re: tony nichols

Doesn't sound like you're looking for  big bits of ash, so it shouldn't be hard to source it, though avoiding kiln dried may be harder. Ash is not a specialist timber so most decent (ie; not just builder's merchants) timber yards should have some. That size may even be in a timber merchant's offcut bin.

The strips can be cut on a circular saw or a band saw. I actually find the circular saw does a cleaner job at the cost of turning a bit more of the original stock into sawdust. The strips are ready to laminate straight off the saw. My bandsaw leaves a rough sawn finish which requires smoothing a bit to create a tight glue line. Using a narrow kerf blade in the table saw means I don't waste much wood. Most timber merchants will push wood through a circular saw for you for very little cost. Equally you can cultivate a friendship with someone who is a partner in a cabinet makers. They can be very useful for occasional special machining jobs.

I tend to laminate with 3mm strips and they will take a canoe stem curve dry (though I do normally damp them down first). Depends on the curve you're taking the strips round how thick the laminates can be and how soft they have to be. Not sure how much easier air dried is to bend than kiln dried. Soaking wood in water or wrapping it in towel and pouring boiling water over it can be effective at softening the wood for bending. Steaming is also quite easy once you bite the bullet and make a box and rig a wallpaper stripper or kettle for the steam. I did try using plastic drain pipe as the steam box but it kind of melted in the heat. WBP ply does a better job for me.

For the small difference it will make in cost it may be worth getting a couple of extra strips. There's the 'just in case' and the 'they'll come in handy one day' principles to consider as well as the advantage of having at least one to practice with.

Bet thing is to Google for decent timber merchants near your home then ring them to chat about what you need. Let them know you're a boat builder and let the possibility of serious future orders hang unspoken in the air.

Tim.

Re: tony nichols

Hi Timmo

Have got some ash, even got yard to slice it for me, as per your suggestion. Have done a small piece of prelimenary bending seems to be the answer. I can now get on and finish the keel off, then it should be plain sailing( or should that be paddleing). Thanks for all advice and suggestions, will keep in touch. Regards Tony

Hi Graham

Am getting on with canoe, have recieved le tonkinois varnish hopefully i will be able to give it 6 coats or so. This of course will not happen until the weather picks up, but have plenty to do till then. Have spoken to Richard rooth on phone, he confirmed the Ash theory he certainly knows a lot about timber. I first met him when i saw INWE in his front garden a couple of years ago. We had a long chat, and that is how i knew about this site.
Have just seen the Barton turf rally form, can i assume that if we are staying off site we do not have to fill it in, will there be room to turn up with car and be able to park it ok to ofload canoe. If we wish to partake of the barbecue, should i ring them direct to confirm this. Excuse the questions, but i do like to prepare well in advance, i will be booking a b&b not to far from Barton, luckily i do know my way around there as have frequented it many times. Was only there last year with my small dell quay dory, i actually slipped it in the local boat yard, have seen the rally site, but have never been in there. This i know is an ideal location, and cannot wait to canoe on it (as long as theres room for another grey beard). Regards Tony
