Aber for a first build?

I'm still considering what to build I had decided on Tirrik but have read that it might be a bit tippy being a double ender, I have been looking round at other designs and the Aber looks good though it is more planks per side.
when the time comes I'll be buying a Jordan's kit to save a little time. I am a long way off being able to build due to space restrictions but I'm trying to research and make sure I make the right choice plus I can use the time to gather tools and fittings etc.

Any advice or opinions will be useful, my sailing will be local to start with the Exe and Teign estuary trips to the Dart.  I will be solo but I am a big lad I just want to potter do a spot of fishing drop my crab pot and generally relax a few overnights sleeping ashore or aboard oh and I do love the lug rig.

Just started an Ilur using a kit from Alec Jordan. Not got pics with me, will try and post a couple when I get back home.

Kit and design are both beautifully thought through, have to recommend them. The kit has saved days of work laying out and cutting parts and Alec does make extremely efficient use of each sheet of ply.

Discovering it's important to assemble things exactly in the order the instructions give (certainly in these early stages.). Straying from that sequence would leave you with bits that won't fit. In the case of the Ilur, for example, the centreboard case is inserted before the keel and planking.

Because of that you will have to source at least some of the timber needed for the build before you start, so budget for that as well as the kit.

The Aber is a nice boat, should do what you'll be asking of it. One of the HBBR crew does have one down your way, they may follow up wiith more intelligent remarks of their own!

I launched my Aber in 2012 and I think it is a fantastic boat that looks very pretty and rows and sails really well.  I use it single handed most of the time or with one crew (+/- dog).  I am based in South Devon but the boat gets towed all over the place.  Which version are you planning to build?  Mine is clinker ply with steamed oak ribs and I built it from just the plans.  I have got a well equipped workshop and reasonable skills and it took about 500 hrs of work.  I have both a balanced lug sloop rig that I use for "proper" sailing and a loose footed lug rig that I use for sail and oar trips (with two mast positions).  Please let me know if you would like to come over and have a look at my boat and compare notes.

I'm glad you're keeping busy.  I was talking to Alec Jordan the other day and he told me he is moving his home and business down to Watchet in Somerset.  I think he likes the idea of some daylight during the winter!

Brief topic drift! 

Alec's already moved I think. Was in the process of packing when I ordered my kit, think it was the last thing he shipped from North of the border.

Hopefully we'll end up in the same place for a while next year. Doubt the Ilur will be ready by then though. Building her in France so only make progress while over there (in between all the other jobs that need doing like roofing outbuildings, digging up tree stumps etc.!) I've decided on the balanced lug, but may end up with the missainier as a second sail one day.

Thanks David I would love to see your Aber I the flesh and chew over the cud with you about the build. It all seems positive so far at least if Jordan's has moved down here I can save postage by collecting.

If you're thinking of collecting it will be worth checking how heavy the kit is. For the Ilur (several sheets of 18mm MDF for the mould and strong back parts plus the sheets of 9mm and 18mm ply for the boat) it would have been at least two trips if collecting using a roof rack on your average family car. I got half on a trailer and half in the camper when moving mine on to France. 

I imagine the Aber will be a little lighter, but not sure it will be down to one roofload.
