Yesterday, I completed the construstion phase of my Oughtred designed Auklet so felt qualified to join the forum. Just the final coats and the rigging to complete now. I started the Auklet last November as a learning exercise prior to a Tirrik and it would just fit onto the bow of my small yacht. The yacht has since been sold and the suggersted build time of 120hrs will take me 360hrs. I do a lot of 'thinking thrice' but a Tirrik now seems too ambitious. What I would really like is a Wee Seal, but I suspect so do most forum members!
Similar to anouther contributor, it took me up to 65hrs until I fitted my first plank. This incuded sticking 11 strips of ash for, and cutting the transom. It also included a spectacular failure to steam a stem (bending frame far too weak, then made a laminated ply stem as recommended). At 120hrs I had painted the outside of the hull and the shell was turned for fitting. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi Neville, welcome to the forum and well done on your Auklet.
Don't be too put off building your Tirrik. I built a Whilly Tern, one size down from a Tirrik, and then built an 11ft Dinghy and it was only then I realised how easy the Whilly had been, and how brilliant Iain Oughtred is. Your Tirrik will only have four planks per side instead of the nine or so I can count on the Auklet, my Coot had ten. Being double-ended the Tirrik doesn't have a transom, with all that tricky bevelling for each plank. There are two stems to contend with but these have a shallow curve making them easier to laminate and bevel. I think the Tirrik build would be much quicker than the Auklet. I built my Whilly Tern from scratch, but when I built the Coot I used a plank kit from Alec Jordan , he also does a plank kit for the Tirrik if you wanted to make life even simpler. A Wee Seal would be nice but that's a different build all together! For those not familiar with Oughtred's Wee Seal here's one on duckworks site. ![]() Have fun. |

Completed a year and a day after I started. It floats! Need better river conditions to have a proper try.
