Building a Thames 12 rowing skiff

I started building this little Paul Fisher design a week ago.

Re: Building a Thames 12 rowing skiff

A Week Ago!!!!!

Anders that kind of urgency is really unbecoming of a gentleman.

I started building Katie about six months ago and after several cockups, all my own, plus a fair bit of doing nothing, I've just started to glue her up.

Your skiff looks very curvy, nice transom. Keep sending the pictures, will she be taped or sheathed?

Regards
Graham

Re: Building a Thames 12 rowing skiff

Will she be taped or sheated.... Dunno. I think taped on the inside and thats it. I dont like taped seams, but I have the feeling that sheating uses a lot of epoxy, (a lot of dinero, a lot of weight)
How much extra epoxy will I be using if I sheet the outside and sheet the floor inside compared to just taping the inside of the seams. The hull will be painted in and out.

Yes, a week. Not bad. I´m actully a little further. Since I work at home, I prefer takeing a week for things like boats and then work extra in between. It works better for me. And besides, I needed a hull to look at. Life is empty without a hull. A hull means dreaming, possibilities.

What is Katie, A rowing skiff, a part of a catamaran?

Re: Building a Thames 12 rowing skiff

Anders,

Don't tape the outside - it will spoil the lines completely. Chris W used fine cotton sheets from Tesco - el cheapo and thin to reduce the amount of epoxy used.

Taping all those planks and aligning them parallel is a real pain. I suggest you also sheath the inside with fine cloth. That will be much quicker and there won't be any unsightly lines.

If she has bulkheads and seating that will add strength, reducing the reliance on sheathing.

cheers

Thanks for the reply.

I wont be taping the outside. It looks horrible. I will either tape inside only or sheat outside and partly inside.

dunno

Anders, I think you should be awarded the quote of the year:

"Life is empty without a hull.  A hull means dreaming, possibilities"

I wondered what the wampum was wrong with this last winter - nothing to dream about

"Life is empty without a hull.  A hull means dreaming, possibilities" Quote of the year: gets my vote too. How about it gets put above the HBBR stand that is planned for Beale?!

Yes Anders

As TimmO has suggested, may we quote you in large letters over the HBBR stand at Beale?  That is always assuming things are wafting in that general direction and that our disorganization is up to the challenge

Re: Building a Thames 12 rowing skiff

Good question!

I'm a willing volunteer too. But not sure who to volunteer to! Did anyone stick their head above the parapet to organise this?

Tim.

The 3rd photo above  reminds me of a 'cat's cradle', a game played by schoolgirls in the UK. It seems to do the job rather well!

I think I know the game you´re talking about. But thats not my inspiration.

Roping is common practice when building Spanish guitars

Do you build classical guitars? I learned to play them at school, but never thought of building one.

Oh I see. Very clever. Hard to see how one could add even pressure when there are no straight edges.  A time honoured clamping technique then. I had wondered where the inspiration came from.

If you are seriously inspired by this, might I suggest building a medieval lyre? This page gives instructions for the 6th century lyre found at Trossingen in SW Germany, the only such instrument found intact:

Trossingen Lyre

You can hear what it sounds like by clicking on the video here.

Should sound good floating downriver if you have a period boat

My professional me is a guitarbuilder specialized in flamenco guitars. I play them as well.

Authun, when not building guitars, I prefer to build boats.
