Hi All,
My random orbital sander has just packed in. The motor is running but the disc isn't going anywhere so I suspect there's a cog wheel or something minus a few teeth. While I investigate I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice on a replacement. My first sander was a Black & Decker 1/4 sheet palm type. One of the black pro range which I bought during the 80's, it was brilliant and lasted twenty years. I think I paid £30. My next was a Bosch green job 125mm Random Orbital which lasted about 18 months and cost about £80. I was so pissed off at it that I lashed out a whole £30 next time for a Mac Allister which has been brilliant, and lasted a few years, and two boat builds ............until this afternoon. I want one with Mains power, which will take a vacuum in its stride, and takes nice cheap discs. Any thoughts on whether I should bite the bullet and go for something more expensive/reliable or keep buying cheap and be prepared to replace at regular intervals? Cheers Graham |

Hard call.
If the budget runs to it Metabo have never let me down. Blue Bosch rate second. The usual web search normally kicks up a good deal somewhere. The random orbitals with round discs are a revelation after normal orbitals. But you have to buy discs in bulk for them to be 'cheap.' I bought a bulk load 6 years ago, still haven't finished that pile yet! Also the more expensive tend to be less tiring to use (it's either weight or better damping.) Having said that you can get through a few cheap ones for the same price! Tim. I make a lot of tools from Axminster Tools (axminster.co.uk) work hard and rarely have a problem, including their own brand random orbit sander. On the rare occasion that there is a problem, there customer support is legendary... Tomsk On 16 May 2013 21:51, "Port-Na-Storm [via UK HBBR Forum]" <[hidden email]> wrote:

Hi Tomsk,
Unless I'm being really dim, no comments at the back there, I can't see Axminster's own brand on their web site, perhaps they've discontinued them. I dismantled mine today and can't see anything wrong, the brushes are fine and the motor runs well driving the pad, but once there is any load it grinds to a halt. I think its dead Jim. I'm thinking about this DeWalt which seems to be fairly good deal. DeWalt Sander Time will tell. |

Check out the Bosch
A professional carpenter once commented that Dewalt were overpriced Black and Decker. He'd had to strip one of his down and found it was identical inside to the DIY branded stuff at half the price. Can't say if that's true and, even if it is, whether it's true across the range, but It's made me cautious of the brand. I've had the Blue Bosch 125 mm for a few years and while I've replaced the velcro backing pad once nothing else has worn out despite some brutal use. Tim.

I've heard the same: http://www.ebuild.co.uk/topic/11933-new-dewalt-1st-fix-nailgun/page__hl__dewalt "joiner" on that thread is/was a professional joiner and at least one the other guys are in the building trade. The general consensus seems to be that DeWalt are not great. |

Thanks for the heads up guys.
Of course Branding is an interesting subject all of its own. When my wife's Volvo C30 had a problem with injectors the guy on the service desk said it would take five days for the parts to come from Sweden. I asked him why they didn't just nip down to Hendy Ford as its basically just a Ford Focus with knobs on. He didn't seem very amused. And of course my Black & Decker sander was the one which lasted 20 years. Confusion reigns once more but I will take heed of your advice. |

Hi Tim,
That Sander looks very reasonable. Sticking with the Alien Probe theme is it happy to get closely acquainted with a vacuum hose? |

The attached dust filter is actually surprisingly good (fills quite fast but collects very useful wood flour.) But it's very easy to swap the filter for a hose once you've sorted making the size of hose match the sander outlet.

I guess you're not being dim, I can't see it either! I guess they have discontinued it, which is a shame... I can't comment on any others I'm afraid. Sorry Tomsk On 19 May 2013 13:43, "Port-Na-Storm [via UK HBBR Forum]" <[hidden email]> wrote:

I came back to this thread looking for information about sanders and noticed the brand loyalty remarks. I was in Screwfix the other day and picked up what I think was a DCD785 de Walt combi drill on offer for 100 quid with one 18v 1.5Ah Li battery. It felt terrific, a little jewel, very light, very smooth feel and sound, compact and with a 2000rpm top speed. If I didn't have enough drills already I would have bought it.
Still thinking about a sander though, and wether a naked cordless would be a good deal considering I have plenty of batteries. |

The drill sounds good, though having once been told DeWalt are identical to Black & Decker I have to work hard to overcome the prejudice that remark has created in me.
Having now invested in Makita 18vLI and Bosch 10.8vLI batteries I'm kind of stuck with those brands, Regarding a cordless sander... I've tended to assume that mains power works best with tools you run continously for some time (like sanders) and battery is great for short run items like drills, reciprocating saws, etc. If I'm simply bolting on a battery then burning through a charge in an hour I feel like I'm using up the battery's capacity to recharge too fast! Probably an utterly erroneous notion though.
