Re: New Welsford Design - Nautilus sailing Canoe

David and any others who might be considering it

The 'plastic' covering I use as a cover for a mast hoop is 'nylon' hose, which slides very easily.  It is also great for mast hoops with a rope through it, finished in a toggle and eye; hoops work without needing adjustment on reefing - unlike lacing, (bit like JR actually).  Nylon is important as polythene binds badly against most mast materials, including paint and varnish.  The plastic plumbing pipe now used in preference to copper also moves quite well if you can get it into a suitable circle - heat usually works but put the rope or something inside it first as any of these plastics tend to collapse while being shaped, when hot.

The next thing is that although the way I have the traveller set up holds the spar very close to the mast, even when reefed, I think I shall try taking the haliyard through the eye on the yard and on round the mast, to the forward end of the spar.  Even with the nylon it is necessary to grab the sail and give it a tug when furling as there is still just too much friction in the system for it to drop unaided.

We shall overcome
