Can anyone suggest a source of leather for oars? (In the UK)
I've tried googling and have only come up with pretty expensive kits eg Collars 12" leathers at £42/pr. I thought I'd avoided the need for oar leathers when I fitted heat shrink sleeves as recommended by Collars: http://www.collars.co.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=7&pageNumber=4 Actually turn out to be pretty horrible to use as they are hard and the oar slides around in the rowlock. I've been using leathered oars in another boat - not mine - and it feels much better. Another possibility is using rope: http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/06/howto/wrapping/index.htm Not convinced by this for some reason. My inclination is to go for leather if I can find a cheap source - I have two pairs of oar to do. Any thoughts? M |

Can anyone suggest a source of leather for oars? (In the UK) This one comes up quite often! Two sources I have used: First is to keep an eye out at charity shops, car-boots and junk shops for old leather briefcases. The old brown civil service issue ones are great. Enough leather for several oars and generally £5 or less. Other option is to search out saddlery people. People with horses sometimes require scrap leather to protect the horses hooves so there is likely to be a box of scrap pieces to pick through. Particularly good can be large pieces from old saddles (the big flaps that hang down each side of the horse) because they're beautifully oiled and wear proof. If the scrap box doesn't deliver then the Saddlery people will buy several hides at a time so they can be helpful in selling on suitably sized pieces of new leather. Good luck. Tim.

Or you could try these people http://www.leprevo.co.uk/ who provided it for me,
I would also follow Paul Gartside's instructions on his website

For those who missed it, here is just a bit of lateral expansion of this thread, Michael B, aka Doryman, asks " What is wrong with `Duct Tape`?" You will have read right through Mary`s blog at http://withneedleandpalm.blogspot.com/2011/01/new-oar-leathers.html to understand his question and her reply. Those who know me will understand why I emphathise with Doryman`s question.

Uhhm, I like the look, feel and everything of those handsewn oar leathers. Duct tape is something really ugly compared.

I'm not sure how suitable it might be, or whether you will recognise the chain. Here in the north west of England, there are fabric shops selling stuff by weight (even T-shirts!) called Abakhan. They usually have a basket of leather off-cuts, again sold by weight, at about £4 per kilo. I think much of it is ex upholstery trade, or maybe leather coats and such. Worth a look anyway. They have stores here:
Birkenhead Chester Hanley, Stoke Liverpool Manchester Mostyn, N. Wales Preston Also: Estonia, Latvia. (?!!) Ian |
