Hello Paul. That’s a very sad picture but building a boat (and especially designing one as well) is never wasted time. See you on the Thames, Tony

Ah my friend,
Illusion was a brave and valiant attempt, which should be applauded.
I hope some day I have the balls to build something to my own design.

And In memory of those brave days I give you once again..........

Brave days indeed. Many mistakes made, many things learned and thank you everyone for your ideas and support along the way.

I really like the You Tube video.

Next time....less rocker and more like a 2 man canoe ....with a sail.....that rows fast

Quota of two boats? You are well off compared to the guy who is selling his punt on eBay .

Re: The Illusion is gone

That's terrible.

One boat can never be enough. I have explained to my wife that boats are like shoes, or handbags, first you need a range to cope with different situations and then there are some that you have to have just because they're beautiful/unusual/interesting/will come in handy some day/etc.

How about agreeing a permitted ratio of one boat to, say, five pairs of shoes? Details negotiable!

Re: The Illusion is gone

Hi Paul,
I am thinking of making a simple downwind sailing rig for the Mermaid in case we get any favourable winds on the Thames this year. Can you let me have the dimensions for Illusion's cut down Mirror rig?
Thanks
Steve

Re: The Illusion is gone

Steve,

When it stops raining I'll measure up.

It's very simple though - just pick a gaff angle of about 30 degrees and 2ft ish wide and chop off the head. A domestic sewing machine will easily hem the sail, but use proper bonded polyester sail thread that is UV resistant and much stronger than domestic thread:

If you plan more sail repairs with your new found skills a 2000m reel is a better deal.

Point North also supply the essential eyelets, I used about 4 along the head

I laminated door stop strips and rounded the edges with a router for a lightweight boom and gaff - lacing the sail through holes in the gaff sets the sail nicely.
