Venetian Blind boat

After putting up six Venetian blinds, and having to shorten them considerably as Ikea only do two lengths, I have 150 wooden slats left.

Each is 800 x 35 x 2.3 mm. Some sort of hardwood, quite flexible.

I can't bear to chuck them, but what to use them for? Wondering about building a boat. At 4m2 not enough for a complete hull, but if I laminated the slats 3 deep, I could get 8, 5m long stringers. Or I could go with just laminating 2 slats deep. Perhaps a skin on frame canoe, similar to Little Kate? Corricle would be a possibility, but I have no use for one on the coast.

Other ideas? Free, cheap, skin on frame plans? If I do it, this would be a quick and dirty project, probably with polyurethane glue. Almost a disposable boat.

Cheers

Osbert

Re: Venetian Blind boat

How about a canoe sail with instant reefing?

Re: Venetian Blind boat

What you need is a plan and some dacron+ this thing they use to glue the skin.

Most clinker or stripplanking plans should work and maybe you can find one free online. Maybe Gavins IMP could do, but I have a feeling that you need a frame between the mid frame and first frame fore and aft. Some make the molds out of thick cardboard.

I’m in a similar situation and have been storing the slats for some years. Mostly I break them up for spatulas, paint stirrers etc.

May I suggest that a coracle would be ideal for thin, flexible laminates? Tony

Dave Gentry does a number of skin on frame boat designs, plans are free I think. Certainly Ruth his pulling boat is.

He is active on the Wooden Boat Forum and has just built a SOF 16/30 super fast sailing canoe.

This is Ruth.

I am most impressed by the sober restraint of hbbr members -
no suggestions of gondolas
no reference to the hoary old 'how do you make a Venetian blind' joke.

As I write this I suddenly recall that in my early childhood my father used old venetian blind slats - big ones - probably 2 inches wide - for a large number of small household DIY projects. I have no idea what kind of wood they were/are, but they were very stiff and splintery.

Bill
Topper Cruz 'Arion' and Linnet (almost).

Re: Venetian Blind boat

Yes, build a skin on frame Gondola. You´re going to be the sensations of the year in venice.
