Yachting Monthly Senior

I am adopting a hybrid approach to planking the Senior. The first 2 planks have been epoxied to Hog, Bulkheads and Floors to provide a solid base to work from. Remaining planks will be stitched and taped. First though I will square off the centreline planking ready for the oak keel and cut the centreboard slot.

Re: Yachting Monthly Senior

The hybrid approach makes sense Keith.

The frame and stem look solid.

Are the screws into the hog permanent?
Or maybe the plank was nailed.

Re: Yachting Monthly Senior

There are 5 permanent screws into the stem to secure the planks around the tight bend. All other screws are washered and removed after the epoxy has cured and the holes will be filled prior to finishing.

Re: Yachting Monthly Senior

Hi Keith,
I love the YW Senior, I'm sure she will turn out very nicely.

Is there a stringer under the edge of the bottom plank? Its difficult to see.
Do the plans give the shape of the planks or do you have to spile them off the boat?
If not I'd watch out you don't "flatten" the curve when spiling the second plank.

Brilliant keep sending the photos.
regards
Graham.

RE: Yachting Monthly Senior

Hi Graham

No, there isn’t a stringer. I will stitch and tape the remaining planks. In addition to the original plans produced by Kenneth Gibbs I have bought a very good set of stitch and tape plans from Paul at Selway-Fisher which do provide the panel shapes. I am hopeful therefore that they will help me achieve the correct shape for the senior.

All the best

Keith

Keith,

Are the permanent screws A4 stainless?

The reason I ask is I'm repairing my Lynx 14 keel with Iroko, which Paul Fisher specified as being screwed from inside the hog.

So far I can only find A2 coach screws.
I have snapped heads off stainless screws too easily, hopefully coach screws are stronger.

I have to admit, I'm a tad jealous of your spacious and well organised workshop.

Cheers

RE: Yachting Monthly Senior

Hi Paul

I have gone ‘old school’ and am using Silicon Bronze screws. I use www.angliastainless.co.uk for both A4 fixings and Silicon Bronze. They have always been able to source what I need one way or another.

And yes, I am very fortunate to have the facilities I have. When we first moved here circa 15 years ago I was able to knock down some old sheds and build a decent workshop with garage attached. I used it comercially for a few years before retiring.

All the best

Keith

Keith,

It is good to see you making progress with your "Senior".  I must admit, I am getting rather envious and I have even wondered why I ever sold mine!

Have you decided which rig you are going to use?  As you know, "Moonfleet" was a gunter.  I always hankered after a gaff rig for her but I was never able to find one that had already been designed that looked right, even the one that Paul Fisher let me have from one of his other pocket gaff cruisers.  I had resigned myself to designing a gaff rig from scratch but that never materialised.  If you go down the gunter route, I strongly recommend a parrel line/beads to keep the yard in tight to the mast when reefed.  This is by far the best way to get the yard to "slide" in my opinion.

I'm looking forward to following your build.

David.

RE: Yachting Monthly Senior

Hi David

Well at least you know that Moonfleet has gone to a good home.

As far as the rig is concerned. My intention is to either go Gunter or Gaff. Much will be determined by whether or not I manage to find a ‘donor’ boat. It is always such a shame seeing boats that are past saving. But if I find a suitable centreboard / gunter rigged Senior on a road trailer I will be a very happy chap indeed!

And thank you for the thoughts on the yard. Your suggestion is a good one and it is a setup I am familiar with as I have the same on Daydream.

I have planed the landing for the keel today and cut the centreboard slot and will post a picture of that shortly.

All the best

Keith

Yachting Monthly Senior

My ineptitude with forums led me to post on the general board a couple of days ago about my 'Build in Progress'. Hopefully this will end up in the right place.
This is the YM Senior work in progress on the hull having planed the keel landing and cut the centreboard slot. Next I will start work on completing the planking.<nabble_img
