Welcome Hannes

I'm no expert on canoes (other members are), however that design looks like it needs more protection from the "high and short waves" you mentioned.
What stops it filling with water?

Re: athabascan canoe - does someone know this shape?

good morning Paul,
i will install a sprayskirt.
also upgrading the bow-area to a coast salish bowstil
https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/projects/02tribal/canoe_tech/media/Technology3_600.jpg

why the idea of this shape:
>>pirogue frame: higher primary stability than roundbottomed
>>uplifting keel/bow-area - i hope that the bow will ride up the waves - basic idea is based on  zillen/plätten/fuhren from the salttransport in the alps
>>high stern-volume based on asymetric

@fuhren: working boats,  ran ww3

Looks familiar to many pirogue types, can't go far wrong if you keep away from big waves.

Re: athabascan canoe - does someone know this shape?

How big are you going to build it?

The drawing is for a craft 3.7m long, 60cm beam with, at a guess, 15cm from the water to the gunwale.

OK as a kayak with a spray deck, a bit low and narrow for an open boat on open water perhaps?

Simon

(That said, I have taken an open sailing canoe as low as this, but much wider (100cm), onto Windemere. It was OK as far as wind-generated waves were concerned. The problems came from the waves made by powerboats.)

The obvious starting point for anyone wanting to build a solo canoe is the Hemlock website. E.g. here: http://www.hemlockcanoe.com/choosing-a-personal-canoe.html

For what is being discussed here, a variation on the solo tripper would appear to be required. See http://www.hemlockcanoe.com/falcon-series.html

This Peregrine video shows the larger of the size series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd1UACwEYBI

For home building, switch to John Winters designs and get plans for an Osprey or a Kite - both available on the Green Valley Boat Works site: http://www.greenval.com/

All these boats are ~ 15' long and are ~ 30" wide.... which seems to suit most medium-large blokes. E.g. Swift Keewaydin 15, the Northwind Solo from Ted Bell: http://northstarcanoes.com/canoe/northwind/?option=solo

If you're smaller, 30" will be too wide... hence boats like the Hemlock Kestrel, Placid Boatworks Rapidfire and Swift Keewaydin 14: http://www.swiftcanoe.com/#!keewaydin-14/ckud

Explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz5biJGXNG4

If you go any bigger than these boats you're either into racing boats (longer) or tandems (bigger all over). You can go shorter (down below 12' if you like) but for cruising, that's slow!

If you are supersized you may get on well soloing a small tandem. E.g. here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKMgLaNVFq0
