Having previously used SP resins, i found Reactive resins website and to be honest decided to give there Syntac EPA a go based on cost.
The resin is very viscous and when wetting out glass tape it seems to fill the fibres and leave a smoother finish compared to the SP System i am glad i was looking to save money and have given it a go and am very pleased so far. Reactive resins also do a paint called Synacryl and i was wondering has anyone used this product and how you found it? |

I´m using the same epoxy resin right now and have built a little clinker ply pram with it as well. It has worked perfectly well for me and its easy to find the correct mix ratio. They have 2 viscositys and when working with glass tape or cloth, I prefer the thin one. Its easyer to wet out the glass. For everything else, the thicker one works very well.

I have only used the thick one and it works better than SP thin one in my opinion for tapes also works very well as adhesive thickened with fumed silica

Coincidentally Jo Moran has a review of Syntac EPA in our May/June issue. We've not tried Synacryl but if anyone who has wants to write a review... Or come to that, an article about car-topping and boat designs best suited to it...

You could ask if they will be at Beale park and if they would supply sample for evaluation.

Hi,
now a definite offer of literature plus product samples that we would be able to hand out, is this going to be ok to do? Shall I accept the offer and get the stuff delivered to me or does someone else want to take this on? Steve |

Take it on as long as you let me know how it goes before end of July when I should be ready for Hull painting

Oh dear, chaps, just seen this... and hope the following is not too late.
Back in the early days of ABBA, unbeknown to me one of our amateurs put a large For Sale sign on his boat and all hell broke loose... the professional boatbuilders who were paying serious hard-earned cash for a stand at the show complained that our amateurs would be competing for their sales without paying for the space... and with Water Craft's complicity. Since then, we've had a rule that the ABBA guys can't try to sell their boats at the show. I've paid for this year's HBBR Advice tent because I think it will enhance the show but I would be very concerned if it was used to promote any particular epoxy or other product, especially when paying exhibitors at the show are selling competing products. By all means tell enquirers which epoxy you use and why... your disinterested opinions would be valued I'm sure ... and use samples to demonstrate if you have them. Ideally of various brands. But please don't put me in the embarrassing position of Water Craft seemingly promoting one brand over another because you guys are giving away that brand's leaflets and trade samples. Sorry! Pete

Hi Pete,
no problem that's why I asked, however this brand is apparently reviewed in your next edition so it may be worth having a few leaflets around

Hi,
the obvious solution here would be to contact other brands and see if they would like to contribute some promotional material, that way we could not be accused of favouring any individual supplier. I would suggest trying West and SP for epoxy, does anyone else have any suggestions or know who will be at the show?

Like the energy and the ideas but perhaps better we don't slide toward becoming some sort of trade stand. All the brands we could show off will be represented elsewhere at the show and, as Pete suggests, it will be better having those exhibitors as friends than competitors! I think we may be better focusing on our amateur status and thinking of ways we can showcase building boats as a hobby. We certainly need a good photo library of boat building photos. Most of us keep albums of our builds, I'm happy to bring along mine. Do we have space for displaying pictures? If so I can print off (colour laser) and laminate up to A3 quite easily. I feel we need something visual to draw people in. Anyone able to put a part built (small) boat on the stand? Would there be space for that? Enough waffle. Hi,
just had a look through the list of exhibitors on the show website, hard to spot any general purpose chandlery shops or specific epoxy suppliers. Am I missing something or is the show going to be mostly boat builders, designers, timber suppliers ?. If it is then I am really looking forward to a great show but it does suggest there will be few brands on show and few people to upset!

You're right, there aren't many, but there may be enough to be worth leaving it to them. Espar Flints Marine Lindon Lewis Marine Melco Bonding Supplies Robbins Timber All supply chandlery, adhesives or epoxies. Don't want to create any problems for Watercraft, they need the advertising revenue as well as goodwill at the event. Lets just go with Pete's steer on this, especially as the HBBR stand is effectively a guest of Watercraft.
