Re: Abel by John

John, Thanks for posting this, you've made pretty good progress. Is that a bottle of Launching Fluid I see in the photo?

Re: Abel by John

Ye cannee keep a Scotsman from the launching fluid...

Lovely boat John, she looks very sturdy and seaworthy. When do you plan to launch her?

Re: Abel by John

No, that's not the launching fluid yet! It's that special liquid that magically appears when you fix the whisky Plank, It also appeared when the keelson was fitted and I'm sure it'll come back when I turn her over.

Planned launch date originally was September this year, but 'the best laid plans of mice & men etc.' Too many sailing days and too many wet summer days, so now I'm hopping to complete early in the new year and definately in time for the Beale Park Boat Show.

Re: Abel by John

I like the idea of a 'whisky plank'. Is there also a cider plank, wine plank, sherry plank, Pimms plank, G&T plank, brandy plank... I won't go on (though I could, the Rangeley will probably be 11 strakes on each side!) Mind you, a 'port' plank could be misconstrued.

Paint job looks very nice. Really must get the hang of doing finishing. Maybe the winter HBBR schedule should include master class days in things like varnishing for those of us who just can't get it right.

How you getting on with spars and fitting out? Those bits always seem to take a lot longer than you expect.

Tim.

Re: Abel by John

Hi Tim,
The spars are made, just need finishing, (more varnishing )
I'm getting ready to turn her over, just trying to get 6 helpers together at the same time, plus some fine weather. Then I can start on the outfit and putting it all together.

Re: Abel by John

Re: Abel by John If only I could learn to enjoy varnishing.

There’s a chicken and egg thing. I don’t enjoy it because I’m bad at it and get poor results. And, because I’m bad at it and get poor results, I hate doing it.

I think there’s some secret in the thinning. As I suggested, a master class would be good. I’d make an effort to get to that.

I do have an HVLP spray gun. Maybe if I try with that?

Good luck with the weather. I’ve been up in Lancaster a few times in recent weeks, got rained on hard every time!

Tim.

Re: Abel by John

Somewhere I came across a saying: real men don't do bright work!

John Welsford when asked whats the best varnish replies: White paint.

Perhaps not for spars - but oil? Varnol?

Re: Abel by John

There are those around here who would recommend B&Q Decking Oil.
It is easy to use, gives a very nice finish and is a lot cheaper than some others.

Re: Abel by John

I've been using stuff for garden furniture on the little bits of brightwork on our small plastic cruising boat. It seems to be as good as anything else and includes a magic extra that discourages mildew from blackening the timber. As Graham says, this kind of thing has a certain pocket appeal...

Re: Abel by John

Re: Abel by John I’m still using the decking oil on Wot Now (the canoe with the Mirage Drive). Doesn’t last as long as some but it’s a doddle to apply so it just gets topped up every now and then. I have gone upmarket to Cuprinol, but only because there was no B&Q branded on the shelf.

Having said that. I lashed out on better quality ply for Ardilla and Varnol brought the grain out beautifully. I just wish I hadn’t spoiled it by putting poorly applied varnish over it! Next time, if wood grain is worth showing off I’ll definitely consider Varnol.

Have you got a brand name for your product Gavin? Sounds worth a try too. Could be useful for the garden furniture as well. I can feel that job coming my way soon.

Tim.

Re: Abel by John - Over she goes
Well I’m impressed!

Can’t say I’ll never complain about lack of workshop space again but you have certainly demonstrated that lack of undercover space is no obstacle to building a beautiful (and substantial) boat.

Ben Cranshaw similarly demonstrated that building a boat doesn’t even need a garden (he built his in a public park) but he had the benefit of the Spanish climate.

Coping outdoors in the North West of England (lovely though it is) shows another level of commitment.

As I said, I’m impressed. Look forward to the finished product.

Re: Abel by John - Over she goes

Congratulations John, as Tim says she's one substantial boat, very attractive.

Is there a suitable cocktail to be imbibed on turning a boat over?

Your "Workshop" looks just right for a bit of camp cruising, I see you've even got the lamp.

I'm looking forward to seeing her on the water.

Cheers, Graham

Whey Hey!!!! my sails arrived this weekend  I'm really excited, I had to borrow our Scout hall to see what they looked like!

What else could I do with a wet weekend . My centre plate also arrived last week, but at 80lbs in weight I couldn't move it by myself for a suitable photo.

I just want to get going and finish the boat,.............  If only work would give me special paid leave .

John

Launch Day

Some Photos to share of a great day out on Windermere.

An excellent day out, and everything as hoped for; Plenty of room, we had 6 adults in for one sail and plenty of room to move and swap places, yet still remain stable. And when the wind increased so did her speed. As this was launch day it was more partying and short trips back and forth across the lake so difficult to assess her sailing characteristics but initial impressions are that she points well in to the wind and the helm feels light to the touch.

If you want to see more, she'll be at Beale this weekend and on the Severn next month.

Regards,
John

Congratulations John, she looks marvellous. And Big!

She'll be competing with Ever Hopeful for the " How many HBBR members can you squeeze into a boat"  award.

Look forward to seeing her and meeting you at Beale.
Cheers.
