RE: SF Lillie

Paul , the rods are duct rods 9mm and the sockets I've made out of what I had under the bench.

RE: SF Lillie

Well I have finished balancing the trailer so the boat now sits nicely on the rollers and keel rubbers, so that's sorted just got to get straps and pads. The sails arrived !!!!! I can't try them out yet as the weather's too c..p to put the masts up. Anyone might say well it's only water. I'm going to have a nice day when I roll the boat out and bend the sails on. Too much wind today.
So the only thing left to finish is the canopy. The end is on , I'm just having problems with the pointy end, lots of pleats. And then the tie downs oh yes the zips but they are easy. I like sewing zips. Lovely sails.

RE: SF Lillie

Just enough room to put up the mizzen and the camping tent. I hope that Nabble doesn't rotate these.

Great so Nabble fooled, rotate the photo before inserting. Nice little sail, can't wait until I can put up the main as well, just need some more lacing!!
At last the camping tent fits just need to put in press studs so it doesn't get blown away. I would not choose the same material again. I think I would go for a lightweight canvas. Still it's waterproof and wind proof , just a few more anchor tapes to be stitched in.
I have tried to insert a photo but the gremlin has wised up and stays one step ahead. It still puts the photo on its side. so until the next time.

RE: SF Lillie

Well here's the on I took today. Managed to bend the sail on-just got enough lacing !!! There are a few minor adjustments to make and some additions so still plenty of work to do.

RE: SF Lillie

She looks lovely Richard, well done.

I can spot the SF sheerline curve. The joke is he starts every design drawing the same curve ha ha.

RE: SF Lillie

That really is very, very beautiful Richard; not that your work is ever anything else.

A tip, (I think) for getting the images upright -

Take them to the cleaners; no, sorry 'croppers'.  Yes that's it, rotate them, then at least go through the motions of having cropped them; a millimetre here or there will do.  Once 'saved' that seems to delete the original buried orientation intructions.

No promises, but it has worked for me

RE: SF Lillie

Chris, I have tried rotating pic before entering it into nabble with little effect. A conclusion that I formulated a time ago was that taking a photo with a proper camera is different to that of a phone. Nabble seems to treat them differently. The ones it put on their side this time fits with this hypothesis , they were taken on the phone as I thought that I had left the camera at home and not in my jacket pocket *.*.* .

RE: SF Lillie

Well nearly all packed up for a Saturday launch, the wine is in the chiller already. Just changed the main halyard and will give a few dings some paint tomorrow. The trip from the barn to home threw up a few trailer problems which had to be changed, I would suggest a few more after the trip to Barton Turf and back next week. Some pictures will follow probably when I get back from a weeks hols on the broads etc.

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Still has one or two problems, like the boom end is a bit low, and the tiller makes it awkward for Richard to tack and get his weight across quickly/easily. (Boat is unballasted)

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Nice to see her sailing, need a bit of wind to blow the creases out..

Barton turf  and the Punt Club Pontoon, Hope to get Blue Moon up there in a couple of years or so for the Barton regatta.. (August bank holiday each year).  Sadly she won't get launched till next March now that I've not managed to get her ready for Horning regatta (31st July-6th Aug)..

Well thanks to Di at BTAC I ended up in the water and sailing with the last of the available wind last week, it was HOT . A few awkward points as Simon mentioned, the boom is too low and the tiller too long, so makes for difficult operation so a few changes to make. I moved the clew downhaul closer to the end of the boom and that gives me more a lot more room under the boom. A bit off the end of the tiller will make easier passage across the boat.
Overall I wouldn't build it again but a good experience, nice little hull, I'll have to see how she handles in a bit of wind.

Down the slip for the first time and no leaks!!

The rowing system works OK and stows well on the rests made.

The following picture show the boat mooring with tent erected.

In all I think that the boat not only looks better being constructed in clinker ply but is a lot easier to make and stronger.

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Cobnor week ended prematurely when I broke the mast. Lovely sail on my first day, sail shape great with a permanent reef in so that I could at least get under the boom. I had also cut 10" off the tiller to give myself the room to cross over the boat. All went well until the second day when towing the boat down to the slip The mast hit a branch and bang it broke. My own stupid fault for not paying attention.
The good news is that the insurance will cover the cost of a new one - 3 weeks - hey ho.

And heres a photo (courtesy Graham ) of the boat sailing up to East Head.

Normal service will be resumed.

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

It was really distressing to see you motoring back to the campsite with no mast,, Richard. However it’s good to hear the insurance will pay for a new one.
Also good to get a chance to row her using the amnazing facing-forward mechanism, which took quite a lot of getting used to I have to admit.
A kind onlooker took a video which is here: https://youtu.be/NywPV4lVaw4.

That's a pain! Am I right in thinking you've not had a lot of luck with masts in recent years. Insurance payout good result though.

The forward rowing system looks very cool (thanks for video Chris.) It could overcome much of my reluctance to row. Just the width of a boat with oars left to think about, not such an issue with Ruzvaen. Will mainly be using her on the sea, large lakes, estuary etc.

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Sorry to have missed this year's camp, and disappointed to learn of your dismasting Richard, a dammed nuisance, were the trees reclaiming one of their own?

I had hoped of attempting the Hayling challenge rowing around in the Clovelly scull, I am sure a swift navigation is possible, but my arm isn't ready for it yet,

Mark me down for next year maybe?

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Varnishing new mast - 4coats thus far, but the temperature dropped last night so I'm having to wait for this afternoon to get another one on. I'm just going to go for 6 coats I think that's enough for me. Then put all the bits and pieces back such as gater and cleats.

Sorry did it again.

RE: SF Lillie on Barton Broad

Shiny!

I think 6 coats shows admirable patience and perseverance!

Not sure I've managed that many at the build stage of any boat part.

Mind you, you'll do another coat next year, another the year after, etc. You'll soon be up to 10 plus. Serious varnish addict levels.
