That's a nice looking boat. Lot's of deck to keep you dry, lots of work to create it! Well done with the safe lift onto the trailer. Hope the trapped nerve gets sorted, they can be very unpleasant.

Well I have been thinking about a camping tent for some time. A few weeks ago the guy who owns the farm, who knew what I had been thinking about, came up to me and beckoned , took me around the back of the units pointed and asked if that was of any use !!! Oh joy, a good quantity of 9mm "Duct Rod". Ideal , he had spotted it in a skip and yanked it out. Glass fibre coated with polyprop.
I cut some lengths and offered it up to the cockpit. That gave me the approximate sizes and positions. Now the problem of fixation. Well I had under the bench some round brass bar but no flat. Oh well you have to end up buying somethings. Bored out the bar to make six sockets and then silver soldered these onto flat backing. Screwed these onto the inside of the combing. Works a treat. Pictures below. ![]() ![]() ![]() I do have some left. Richard |

Richard,
That's a lovely bit of metal working. Remind me please how to do silver soldering. It's at least 45 years since I last did it. Cheers Paul |

Well done Richard, a very professional looking job as usual.
I admire your skill levels, and also your tool set. I love the way you casually mention drilling out bar to make a tube. I think hoops are the way to go for a tent, more useable headroom and less fapping. Take care. Grum. |

Thinking about it. The easy solution is plastic 15mm water pipe or conduit pipe.
One screw at bottom to retain the pole, one screw through a clearance hole to screw the far side only. I've done similar in what DCA Sarah says is "the most organised cutlery store". It's a great way to store tools, secure when heeled 90 degrees! ![]() I took this photo looking upwards, MilliBee is lying on her side for keel repairs. Paul |

Is that photograph big enough?
Anyway get my material for the canopy today. From Point North , very good overnight delivery. So patterns to follow, just a repeat of Calluna's tent, some good waterproof flat seams and a access flap, waterproof zip of course. Should keep me busy of course although I've just buggered my back again so less sitting and more exercise for a bit. Richard |

Which of their fabrics are you using, Richard?
|

Hi David.
I got it yesterday, quite good really, nearly next day. Its their Odyssey range, coated polyester. I think its about 250gm . I have just opened it up and feeling it I hope it will soften up a bit it's not too easy to see and feel from the websites but its waterproof with a certain breathability . We'll see. Unfortunately my old supplier seems to have gone out of business. I'm just about to start so if you can wait David I'll let you know how it fares. I still have to wait for basting tape from a different supplier , and they are not very optimistic about delivery times. It's only two rolls for gods sake. regards Richard |

Thanks, Richard. I've been looking at their website and, I must admit, I find their offering quite confusing. I think it is quite a challenge to find something that is the right weight, water repellency, breathability and price, never mind colour! I have not yet got past a few samples, so I'll be interested to hear how you get on with your choice.
Best regards, David. |

Hi Richard,
Just when you thought it was safe to go outdoors again, the shutters come clanging down. Kent really does seem to be the focal point of all that is crazy in this crazy world right now. I hope you are well away from the unfinished Lorry Parks and outside portaloo that is the M20. I have just crashed the border into Scotland to retreive the Tooth Fairy who has been caring for her parents these past seven weeks. We managed to make it home yesterday before Queen Nicola pulls up the drawbridge. I have enough boat building and repair work to keep me going for months which is just as well as I've just realised I would have to drive through the Level 4 Portsmouth areas to get to Chichester Harbour. Not Happening. Stay Safe everyone and enjoy the peace and quiet. Grum. |

Thanks Graham and I was wondering whether you had made it home. Personally I'm in tier 4 and the boat is in a 2. How lucky is that !!!! I'm going to start sewing but can't see if it fits, so only a bit of sewing and I hope I get the measurements correct. Sew much for check two or three times before you make. This could go horribly wrong. Other than that I'm stuffed. Good luck with yours and have a good Christmas. Which side of the water is Timmo in? Get the wrong answer Tim and you're stuffed !!
Keep posting Stay safe Richard |

“Sew much for check two or three times.” I see what you did there, very good. Timmo, If you’re coming over The Channel, Bring Cheese ! Well started the camping canopy , back to the bedroom as with my previous covers. The material is from Point North's Odyssey range. 217gms per sq M. I did think that I might have made a mistake but now that I have worked it - good choice. It's quite light reasonably flexible and waterproof. I decided to sew a seam down the apex so doubling the width, this should give me ample to cover the arch. Trouble is next step does mean that I have to go and model it over the frame! Anyway first seam finished , all 2 1/2 metres of it. A really nice seam, a Full Flat Felled seam. There are 5 layers of fabric in that seam.
A few pictures. David depending what you want the fabric for I like it. Excellent service from Point North. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Richard |

It's looking good, Richard.
I'm feeling pleased with myself that, having recently studied the Sailrite videos, I now know what a full flat felled seam is! Keep up the good work. David. |

David, yes they are very good instructions and together with the printed ones, its a very good website.

I've just put in a ridge pole. Fabricated three sockets for the hoops so that the ridge pole can just slot in.
![]() Sorry about the quality of the photo. Sewed the flat end onto the cover and to accommodate all lines and tiller, now i've got to taper the front end of the cover. David. Not too keen on the fabric, it's almost too stiff to sew. If I had the time again I'd go for a more clothy material. You live and learn. It's not easy to turn corners. Richard |

Excellent work there Richard. Now tell me, oh wise Master Rigger, when doing your eye splicing are you using traditional fids or the newfangled D splicer? And what size splicer would you recommend for 8-10mm double braid? Asking for a friend. 😎 Sent from my Xperia by Sony smartphone ---- inwe [via UK HBBR Forum] wrote ---- I've just put in a ridge pole. Richard,
Are the poles and sockets readily available? If so, they could form a permanent cover for MilliBee on our drive. Sockets are the tricky part. Paul |
